2018 City of Lakes Loppet Classic: Saturday January 27th
Race start time is 9:00 am with a forecast temperature of 28 F rising to about 31F at noon.
At these temperatures a soft wax like Swix CH8 or HF8 would have the lowest friction during the entire race.
The chart below shows the forecasted temperatures in the black line with the scale on the left. The predicted coefficient of friction for 4 different waxes is on the right hand axis. The fastest wax will be the one with the lowest coefficient of friction
The chart below shows the estimated time lost due to using a sub-optimal wax.
Swix HF8 is the fastest and so has zero time lost. The plain paraffin version Swix CH8 is 30 seconds to 2 minutes slower depending on finishing time. Slower skiers will be on the course longer when it is warmer out so the HF8 advantage becomes larger as the day progresses.
